At almost 1,450 metres above sea level, Castelluccio overlooks the Piana Grande, a karst plateau that between late May and early July turns into a mosaic of colours thanks to the flowering of the lentils grown together with cornflowers, poppies and other wild species: a natural phenomenon that every year attracts photographers and visitors from all over Italy.
The village, rebuilt after the 2016 earthquake, retains the charm of an isolated outpost on the edge of the Monti Sibillini, now a National Park. The Piana is also one of the most beloved sites in Italy for paragliding and hang-gliding enthusiasts, thanks to the constant updrafts and the view that sweeps over the entire plateau.
Those who don't fly can still enjoy long walks and mountain bike excursions along the trails that surround the basin, about 40 minutes from the farm stay.
